Mind the deadline for a “donation this year”
For furusato nōzei, in principle the date your payment completes is the donation date. At year-end, note the following:
- Credit-card payments must be completed by the year-end date and time (deadlines differ by portal).
- Bank transfers and payment slips may be treated as next year depending on when the money is received and processed.
Final check of your limit
December is when your annual income is nearly fixed. If you over-donate beyond your limit, the excess is your own cost. Check your estimated limit and leave some margin to be safe.
Don’t forget the One-Stop application
Even for donations made at year-end, if you use the One-Stop Exception you must submit the application form by the January deadline of the following year. If you can’t make it in time, switch to a tax return.
Portal deadlines and the handling of payment methods change from year to year. Always check the latest guidance.
